Our Work With Golden Gate Audubon Society at Pier 94
August 2021
The American Association of Zoo Keepers San Francisco (AAZK-SF) is thrilled to share that they are the recipient of AAZK’s Conservation, Restoration, and Preservation grant. With the support of the San Francisco Zoo, AAZK-SF will be collaborating with the Golden Gate Audubon Society (GGAS) to assist in the restoration of tidal wetland areas at Pier 94 in San Francisco. Pier 94 is a former industrial dumpsite and has been an area of focus for GGAS for nearly twenty years.
As one of the few tidal wetlands in the area, Pier 94 provides valuable habitat for birds, fish, native plants and other wildlife. As a result of past restoration efforts, species such as sandpipers, herons, terns, snowy egrets, willets, killdeer, and American avocets are beginning to return to the bay side. Using grant funds, AAZK-SF will be contributing to these efforts by assisting in the purchasing and planting of native plant species, and the removal of non-native plants. By collaborating with GGAS, AAZK-SF members receive valuable professional development, and networking opportunities, provide a service to the community, and work to support local wildlife populations in the Bay Area.
